Abstract:

A brief history of air pollution will be presented highlighting Los Angeles smog formation. Focus will be on ozone and PAN chemistry. Mexico City and Houston (Deer Park, Texas) will be highlighted. In Mexico City the use of Methyl-t-butyl ether as a fuel additive will be discussed in light of its decomposition to form formaldeyhde and isobutene and their relationship to ozone and PAN formation. Chlorine chemistry in Houston will be discussed as it relates to increased ozone formation from low reactivity alkanes.

Biography:

Jeff Gaffney is a Senior Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory in the Atmospheric Sciences Section of the Environmental Research Division. He obtained his B.S, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Riverside. He has worked at Brookhaven, Los Alamos, and Argonne National Laboratories during his career. He has authored over 100 papers in the area of atmospheric and environmental chemistry.
