More than 1,100 students from kindergarten through college explored Kitchen Chemistry and other chemical concepts during the Chicago Section’s annual National Chemistry Week extravaganza Saturday, Nov. 4, at Loyola University Chicago. The Section partnered with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Chicago Section, the Chemical Industries Council of Illinois, and ChemWest -- a local chemistry teachers organization - to plan and execute the day’s events. Section and Student Affiliate members conducted hands-on experiments, exhibits, demonstrations, and presentations on such topics as the water cycle, environmental chemistry, chemistry on the internet, the human genome project, mercury safety, and "Is it Chemistry, or Is It Magic?" Hands-on activities included "pH is pHun," "Pizza Box Spectroscopy," and "Kitchen Chemistry." Exhibits by industry, government, and professional societies provided a balanced view of opportunities and applications of chemistry careers and knowledge.
