The Chicago Section in 2000 strengthened its relationship with two major educational institutions based in Chicago: the University of Chicago and Northwestern University. First, The Section agreed to cooperate with Northwestern University on the presentation of the Basolo Award. Henceforth, the presentation will be made at a joint meeting in October at or near the Northwestern campus. The award is named for Fred Basolo, past Chair of the Section and past President of the ACS, who has also been named the recipient of the ACS Priestly Medal for 2001. Second, after a hiatus, the Section reached an agreement with the University of Chicago to alternate the responsibility of choosing the Steiglitz Lecturer and of hosting the dinner meeting. Hosting or co-hosting these major university events gives the Section an excellent opportunity to enhance its presence in these communities. Faculty and student attendance at these meetings is significantly higher than at other Section meetings, thus enhancing the reputation of the Chicago Section ACS as an organization that identifies and salutes excellence in chemistry.
